When choosing a car donation program, there are a variety of
factors to consider.
First, the vast majority of used cars that end up in donation programs are
there because of a mix of three factors;
The desire to help charity
The need to get rid of a decrepit old car, without expense
The benefits of a tax deduction.
Charities who have a car donation program frankly care little why you
donate, as long as they get vehicles that they can turn into help for the
cause they represent. On the other hand, your priorities will help you
choose the right car donation charity for you.
If you're looking to do the most good for charity, look for the organization
that has the lowest administrative and marketing costs. There are a variety
of charity rating organizations that can help, but simple asking a charity
donation program how your car will benefit them is often more illuminating.
If you just want to get rid of an old used car, you only need to find a car
donation program that has free pick up and auto removal in your area. Unless
you live in a very remote or rural area, it's unlikely that there aren't at
least a few car donation charities to choose from.
Lastly, if you're looking to maximize the tax deduction associated with your
auto donation, you need to do a bit more research. Current Federal tax law
limits the tax deduction to $500 unless you are able to provide a
significant paper trail to support it. You'll most likely need a CPA to help
you maximize the tax savings, but the short version is that you'll need a
sophisticate car donation program that is able to track what value was
actually generated by your auto donation.
